Introduction

HALF IMAGE is honored to present the special exhibition “Dialogue In The Dark” The entire gallery will be transformed into an interactive exhibition space. An unfinished short story written by Franz Kafka, The Burrow depicts a secluded system of tunnels, and revealed an introspective living style against the secular exterior world. We seek to remodel and further extend the meaning of the burrow in this exhibition, by contextualizing its original connotation within the contemporary world.

Based upon the concept of the Burrow, we construct a contemplative space focusing on the inner world, a poetic dimension of Blackness, through “Dialogues in the Dark.” Here, the conceptualized nucleus of the inner self – the Kafkian forms of absurdity, paradox and intimacy – communicates with the circulating objects in the outside world, and creates a rhythm of darkness. The subjects of the poem are buried in the darkness, meant to be discovered yet constantly rejecting any forms of intrusion. Fragments of the contradicted selves are woven into the sense of ambiguity and mystery. The juxtaposition of the individuals and the whole generates a multi-layer enclosure. In this new burrow, three artists experiment with the connection between the inner and the outer space, and seek to realize their artistic idea through interactive video and audio works.

Yijie Zou creates a private space, a peephole, where the unconscious intervention of the audience transforms the subject of the artwork. Samo Wu focuses more upon painting her own emotions in her videos. Feelings of chaos, conflicts and hesitations coexist with the desire for peace and harmony. The assemblage of tracing lines and ready-made images demonstrates self-contradictions and self-deconstruction in an abyss. White He is obsessed with bantering, deadpan and self-deprecating expressions, all serving as means of solving inner conflicts. Acting as a chanting mediator in the dark, HE establishes an equivocal relationship between the subject and audience, without breaking the balance between the individual and the whole.

The system of this exhibition is such a poetic construction, all the components in are directly related to our emotions, attitude and self-identity to life. Of interest, various parts within the system came to be associated with each other to form a harmonious state, and yielded re-association and re-antagonism when mapping to the entirety.
