My works have not been confined to a certain format all this while. Rather, I have always been pursuing selfreinvention and self-improvement. To me, a seemingly simple painting is actually the most difficult type of art because creating a profound impression in the beholder through a silent, flat medium requires an artist to rack his or her brain for inspiration. Sometimes one needs to take a bold step into the unknown to transcend one’s potential. I believe that there are two ways to seek change in the art of painting: What to paint and how to paint it. “What to paint” refers to finding a new theme to express using a prescribed method; “How to paint” means adopting a new method or medium to express an existing theme. As such, I have chosen the second approach, i.e. to first adopt a new material and a new painting method. These changes have brought an amazing result beyond my expectations. I had always thought that my meticulous drawing methods will yield certain inevitable results in my paintings. However, the change in materials and methods has unexpectedly brought forth the elements of unpredictability which I had been looking for a long time. I will continue to experiment this new series as it may lead to a new breakthrough.
