作品描述

175 Meters
By Gilles Sabrié

175 meters is the level above the sea reached by the Three Gorges Dam reservoir. During the years running up to its completion, big signs appeared featuring a red line and the figure “175M”. Below this line everything was to be flooded, people had to move, villages and cities were to be destroyed and rebuilt. Rarely in human history has a landscape been remodeled on such a scale, affecting so many people.
This photo essay shot along the 500 kilometers of the reservoir banks, from Chongqing to the Three Gorges Dam, aims at capturing how human beings dealt with an ever-changing landscape, the perspective of resettlement, an unknown future. Their lives altered as deeply as the environment. No control. No escape possible. No resistance allowed. The landscape becomes a cemetery of deeply buried emotions, and soon will give birth to a new world. During the labor, we are left to wait, watch, contribute, celebrate or just go. Above 175 meters.

This photo work is born out of the necessity to record these unique moments, before the water rises, forever washing away the memories.

Gilles Sabrié
